Defense of Jacob Keller

After police tased Jacob during a manic episode, video of the incident circulated online. Clara explained what had happened in a group chat with friends. When another friend asked whether Clara was safe around Jacob, Nina responded before Clara could.
Nina based her defense on what she had observed during visits to the Keller home. She distinguished Jacob’s illness and disability from violence, affirmed that he had earned Clara’s trust through his parenting, and said she would help Clara leave if she ever believed Clara was unsafe. Her intervention allowed Clara to receive support from someone with direct knowledge of her household instead of having to answer the question alone.
Memorable Quotes
“Okay, no. Clara, wait. I got this.”
Nina interrupted before Clara could answer the question about her safety.
“Jaz, I know you didn’t mean anything bad by that, but I’ve stayed over at their place more times than I can count. I’ve seen Jacob after migraines. After shows. After nights when he couldn’t sleep. I’ve seen him hold Clara’s hand when she cried so hard she couldn’t breathe. I’ve seen him play lullabies on the piano because he knew she wouldn’t ask but needed them anyway.”
Nina grounded her answer in what she had witnessed during her visits to Clara’s home.
“That man is not violent. He’s not dangerous. He’s sick. And what the world did to him? That’s not his fault. Clara loves him because he earned it. And if I ever thought she wasn’t safe, I’d be the first one throwing her over my shoulder and getting her out.”
Nina defended Jacob while making her loyalty to Clara’s safety explicit.
